Utilization of a Reminder System in an Electronic Health Record for Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Orders
Your patient rolls into the PACU, and you receive a report from the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). As soon as the CRNA leaves, your patient reports nausea, pain, or becomes unstable. You review the EHR for orders from the CRNA or Anesthesiologists to treat your patient, but you do not see any PACU orders. Instead of caring for your patient, you have to call the anesthesia provider to ask them to put in PACU orders. This process delays your patient's care. As a PACU Registered Nurse (RN), I have encountered this scenario numerous times in my career.
