Coffee Consumption in MASLD: From Clinical Associations to Molecular Mechanisms

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) is a leading cause of liver disease worldwide. It is associated with metabolic syndrome and contributes to increased cardiovascular risk. The main focus of management revolves around weight loss and lifestyle modification, while therapeutic options remain limited around the world or are restricted to more advanced disease. Coffee is a commonly consumed beverage with numerous bioactive compounds and is thought to have many potential health benefits. Coffee consumption has been positively associated with reduced risk of MASLD progression and outcomes and is often suggested alongside standard management. This narrative review explores the clinical evidence for coffee across the stages of MASLD, alongside the mechanistic pathways underlying its major bioactive compounds.
