First confirmed record of Centrophorus uyato (Rafinesque, 1810) in Irish waters: integration of morphological traits and DNA barcoding

Abstract We report the occurrence of a mature male Centrophorus uyato (Squaliformes: Centrophoridae) from the Porcupine Bank off western Ireland. A single specimen with a total length of 853 mm was caught by bottom trawl in 2023 at a depth of 660 m. The specimen was identified morphologically and confirmed by molecular taxonomy using DNA barcoding. The morphometric data obtained are consistent with previous descriptions of the species. The cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene sequence grouped in the same clade as several sequences identified as Centrophorus uyato , supporting the morphological identification. The combined morphometric and molecular evidence improves knowledge of C. uyato in the eastern North Atlantic, where confirmed records remain scarce.
