Documenting Narratives of Church Engagements in the Archdiocese of San Fernando, 1972–1986

The Catholic Church has always been a significant force in Philippine society, shaping political and social developments from the colonial era to the restoration of democracy in 1986. This study examines how select members of the Archdiocese of San Fernando responded to the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship. While the archdiocese, under Archbishop Oscar Cruz, maintained a moderate and neutral stance, individual clergy members engaged in varying forms of resistance. Drawing on Robert Youngblood’s typology of conservative, moderate, and progressive church actors, the study demonstrates how the clergy advanced civil liberties and human rights through both public advocacy and discreet activism in Pampanga.
