Iconweave Diamond Mesh: A New Generation of PTFE Mesh for Iconic Façades and Tensioned Skins

Abstract In the evolving world of tensile architecture, mesh fabrics are increasingly specified not just for functional performance but also for their aesthetic, environmental, and structural contributions to modern buildings. This paper introduces a breakthrough in this domain: the ICONWEAVE DIAMOND MESH , an advanced PTFE‐coated fiberglass mesh designed to elevate the application of tensile fabrics in façade design and lightweight shading structures. The defining characteristic of the ICONWEAVE mesh is its uniform rhombus‐shaped (diamond) aperture , achieved through a specially engineered glass fiber weave structure. This proprietary geometry is optimized not only for visual distinction but also for superior biaxial load distribution and dimensional stability. Unlike conventional square or rectangular open‐mesh patterns, the diamond layout allows the fabric to act as a structural skin offering unique light diffusion, shadow casting, and dynamic visual texture under varying sun angles. Constructed using non‐combustible glass yarns , the mesh achieves a Class A fire rating , making it ideal for high‐traffic public installations and safety‐critical architectural elements. The base fabric is coated with PTFE and a surface layer of FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene), enhancing chemical resistance, UV durability, and self‐cleaning properties. With a calculated openness factor of ∼30% , the mesh balances ventilation and shading in both vertical and overhead applications. Beyond technical performance, ICONWEAVE is designed with sustainability in focus. Manufactured using carbon‐free energy , the mesh is supported by an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) and complies with the material transparency and embodied carbon criteria for LEED and other green building certifications. It offers designers an eco‐conscious alternative to conventional shading elements, without compromise on design freedom or longevity. This patented mesh concept set to be officially registered under the ICONWEAVE brand marks a new paradigm in iconic façade design , transforming tensile membrane applications into expressive, sustainable, and structurally integrated building elements.
