Evaluation of Sarcopenic Obesity Risk in Patients Followed up in the Obesity Outpatient Clinic
Sarcopenic obesity, the coexistence of obesity and sarcopenia, increases the risk of metabolic disorders, cardiovascular disease, and mortality. Its diagnosis remains challenging because of the lack of standardized criteria. This study examines the prevalence of sarcopenia in individuals with obesity and its associations with age, sex, body mass index (BMI), and muscle mass. A cross-sectional analysis of 228 participants found probable sarcopenia in 30.7%. Regression analysis showed that age, sex, BMI, and muscle mass explained 40% of grip strength variance ( P < .001). These findings emphasize the importance of routine muscle function assessments and nutritional strategies to prevent muscle loss in individuals with obesity.
