Bringing Phosphorescence to the Classroom: Fast and Simple Synthesis of SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+ Via Solution Combustion and Microwave-Assisted Synthesis

Abstract A novel hands-on experiment was developed to foster authentic scientific inquiry in chemistry among high school students. The experiment centers on the rapid synthesis and characterization of a persistent luminescent phosphor, SrAl2O4:Eu2+,Dy3+. In contrast to conventional solid-state syntheses that require prolonged high-temperature treatment, the adapted procedure allows students to produce a functional afterglow material in under 5 min, making it accessible and safe for standard classroom environments. This experiment has been successfully conducted with approximately 100 ninth-grade students during school visits.
