Independent Validation of CanopySat Carbon Assessment - Comparison Against GFW/WHRC, FAO FRA 2020 and ESA CCI Biomass across 5 Global Biomes
This report presents an independent validation of CanopySat's satellite-based carbon assessment methodology against three major global reference datasets: (1) Global Forest Watch / Woods Hole Research Center (GFW/WHRC) biomass map, (2) FAO Forest Resources Assessment 2020 (FAO FRA 2020), and (3) ESA Climate Change Initiative Biomass v3 (ESA CCI). Five representative forest zones across five global biomes (tropical Amazon, tropical Congo, temperate Black Forest, tropical SE Asia Borneo, boreal Canada) were analyzed. Results demonstrate a mean absolute error of 0.8% between CanopySat estimates and reference dataset means, confirming the scientific validity of the CanopySat carbon assessment methodology for global forest monitoring applications. Biome-specific allometric equations follow Chave et al. (2014) and Potapov et al. (2021). Carbon stocks are calculated using IPCC (2006, 2019) Tier 1 methodology.
