A Preliminary Metaphysics of Power in Generative Relational Theory: On the Conditions under Which Relational Asymmetry Becomes Power-Relevant
Generative Relational Theory (GR) treats relational beings as history-bearing structures whose current form, efficacy, and possible continuation depend on relational histories rather than on isolated point-like attributes. This paper develops a preliminary metaphysics of power within that framework. Its starting point is a typed relational asymmetry that has already acquired relational reality; the central problem is the additional structure required for such an asymmetry to become power-relevant. The proposed account locates that transition in directionally organized dynamical consequence: a relational asymmetry becomes power-relevant when the relational position of one GR entity contributes systematically to deformation of the accessible, feasible, or comparatively weighted future possibilities of another GR entity or of a shared relational configuration. Relational power is then distinguished from a transient power-relevant episode by the conditions through which the power structure itself acquires expected persistence, causal efficacy, and generative efficacy across admissible historical continuations. Attractor-like and metastable regimes, perturbation response, history weights, closure structures, and operator representations are introduced as candidate modeling resources under continued ontological suspension. The paper further distinguishes relational power from its context-dependent manifestations and examines how symbolic, institutional, embodied, and other mediation can make power epistemically accessible while also participating in its reproduction. One symbolic route is resolved into an historically generated equivalence relation, a quotient representation that suppresses selected relational differences, and subsequent symbolization; the equivalence relation itself can remain analytic, can acquire an operative role in manifestation reality, and can additionally acquire relational reality when its persistence and efficacy are established. Comparative relations such as "more powerful than," together with associated rankings or metrics, are likewise treated as historically generated structures whose roles can overlap: a comparison can remain proto-relational while its relational status is unresolved, can become stabilized in manifestation reality, and can additionally acquire relational reality when the comparison structure becomes sufficiently persistent, causally efficacious, and generatively consequential. A later case study reconstructs realist balance-of-power reasoning as a conditional dynamical account in which coupled power deformations can generate a metastable balance-like regime and, under specified conditions, sustain expected proximity to a near-critical corridor. The resulting account is an asymmetry-derived construction of directional relational power; reciprocal power can be represented by coexisting directional components, while other genealogies remain open. The objective is representational and metaphysical within GR's layered reality framework; it does not identify any single mathematical representation with ultimate ontology.
