Más allá de lo monumental: Evolución de la noción de valor en el patrimonio y los desafíos del siglo XXI

The notion of heritage value has evolved significantly since the twentieth century, shifting from a focus on the aesthetic and historical significance of monuments to a broader understanding that includes community, landscape and environmental dimensions. This article analyses the integration of these concepts through the study of key UNESCO and ICOMOS documents, such as the World Heritage Convention (1972), the Burra Charter (1979, revised in 1999) and the Recommendation on the Historic Urban Landscape (2011). It examines how these global institutions have redefined heritage valuation criteria by incorporating participatory and sustainable approaches. Additionally, the article addresses contemporary challenges in heritage management, such as climate change and the inclusion of decolonial perspectives. Based on this analysis, the article offers a critical reflection on the need to continuously adapt regulatory frameworks in response to these conceptual transformations and their practical implications.
