La influencia de la vivienda pública en la formación y transformación de la periferia de las ciudades gallegas
By observing how the Galician periphery has been shaped, it is established that the transformation of the territory around the main cities, the way of building the city and the way of inhabiting it was radically altered during the period of the dictatorship (1939-75) and through publicly funded projects, particularly on the basis of residential estates. Unlike those built in large Spanish cities, the slowness of their construction varies the way they transform rural and urban open spaces. Their consequences of this process influenced the current shape of Galician cities, and are key to take into account when planning their future development. This article summarises the different phases of the formation and transformation of the Galician periphery from the conflict between municipal planning and state projects, in three main periods: between 1939-1959, when rural land was parcelled up and small residential estates were built on the urban border; from 1960-1967, when large amounts of land were planned and reserved; and from 1967-1976, when part of the land reserve was developed through the construction of infrastructures and estates.
