FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF PUNICA GRANATUM L. PEEL EXTRACT AND CURCUMA LONGA L. EXTRACT CO-LOADED MUCOADHESIVE GINGIVAL PATCH FOR LOCALIZED PERIODONTITIS THERAPY
Periodontitis is a chronic inflammatory disease associated with periodontal pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis. The present study aimed to formulate and evaluate a mucoadhesive gingival patch containing Punica granatum L. peel extract and Curcuma longa L. extract for localized periodontal therapy. The herbal extracts were selected for their potential antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Punica granatum peel extract was prepared by Soxhlet extraction, while Curcuma longa extract was prepared by maceration. Three formulations (F1, F2 and F3) were prepared using the solvent-casting method with chitosan, HPMC K15M and PEG 400. The prepared patches were evaluated for physicochemical, mechanical, mucoadhesive and drug-release properties.
