Reimagining English Studies: Interdisciplinary Research, Innovation, Culture, Governance and Sustainable Development in the Digital Age

Abstract English Studies has undergone a significant transformation in response to technological change, cultural mobility, environmental concerns and new forms of social and political communication. No longer confined to the study of canonical literary texts and language systems, the discipline increasingly intersects with cultural studies, environmental humanities, digital humanities, political discourse, education, media studies and questions of social responsibility. This paper examines how English Studies can contribute to the contemporary interdisciplinary agenda of research, innovation, culture, governance and sustainable development. The paper proposes an interdisciplinary L-L-C-G-S framework—Language, Literature, Culture, Governance and Sustainability—as a conceptual model for reimagining the role of English departments in higher education. Through qualitative analysis of selected literary and non-literary texts, including the poetry of William Wordsworth, Shakespearean drama, George Orwell’s writings and Amitav Ghosh’s climate-oriented fiction and nonfiction, the study explores how literary language can illuminate ecological responsibility, political power, ethical leadership, cultural identity and social change. It also considers the possibilities offered by digital humanities, multilingual education, communication skills and emerging technologies. The paper argues that English Studies can function as a bridge between the humanities and other disciplines by developing critical literacy, cultural awareness, ethical reasoning, communication competence and responsible engagement with contemporary challenges. Such an approach can strengthen the contribution of the humanities to the Sustainable Development Goals while preserving the interpretative and humanistic foundations of literary study.
