DEVELOPING GEOTOURISM AND A NATIONAL GEOPARK SYSTEM IN UZBEKISTAN: FROM THE KITAB PILOT PROJECT MODEL TO THE UNESCO GLOBAL GEOPARKS NETWORK

The institutional, economic, and organizational foundations for developing geotourism and establishing a national geopark system in Uzbekistan are examined. A comparative analysis is conducted of the development dynamics of the UNESCO Global Geoparks network during 2022–2026 and the requirements for aspiring geopark territories. Kitab District is assessed as a pilot area, taking into account the scientific significance of the Zinzilban stratigraphic section, the existing governance system, and geoeducation opportunities. The preliminary assessment identifies opportunities to further strengthen local community participation, visitor infrastructure, geoheritage interpretation, and international cooperation. Based on the author-proposed Geopark Readiness Index (GRI), the preliminary readiness level of Kitab District is assessed at 2.8 out of 5.0 points. Drawing on the research findings, a national model entitled "Geotourism + Geoheritage + Community" and a roadmap for its phased implementation during 2026–2030 are developed.
