A cytokinin– NIN module drives spontaneous root nodule formation in alfalfa
Alfalfa can form root nodules even in the absence of rhizobial bacteria in a process controlled by cytokinin and the regulator NIN, and initiated by the plant itself; these observations provide a foundation for engineering nodule-like organs in other crops.
