Earth Day for Future: Framing Environmental Awareness via Youth Climate Activism

This news framing analysis investigates five years (2019–2023) of news coverage across three German-speaking countries (Austria, Germany, Switzerland) to find out how journalists connect the environmental awareness event “Earth Day” (ED) to the youth climate movement Fridays for Future (FFF). Drawing on a longitudinal data corpus (N = 559) of news articles from print and online news outlets, articles were coded for the actors they name, the sources they consult, the topics they address (political process, elections, meetings, protest events, digital events, publications) and their narration practices. This study finds that 51% of ED news includes a reference to FFF. They do so by referencing the FFF movement and its figures, printing interviews with FFF activists, and linking ED topics to climate activities by FFF. This linkage follows the movement’s trajectory, rising from 40% of ED coverage in 2019 to 70% in 2021, before receding as FFF consolidates and newer protest actors enter the field. The narration in these texts anchors ED news through FFF to create relevance for contemporary news audiences, a framing device introduced as frame coupling, which shows that frame sponsorship is not confined to organized actors but can be assumed by journalistic routine itself.
