Assessment as a Tool for Enhancing Teaching and Learning: A Critical Study

Assessment is an essential component of the teaching-learning process. Traditionally, assessment has oftenbeen associated with examinations, marks, grades and certificates. However, contemporary educationrecognizes assessment as much more than a tool for measuring students’ achievement. It is an importanteducational process that provides information about learners’ knowledge, skills, understanding, progress, strengths and weaknesses. Effective assessment helps teachers identify learning gaps and modify theirteaching strategies according to the needs of learners. It also provides learners with feedback, motivatesthem to improve and encourages them to take greater responsibility for their own learning. Different formsof assessment, such as formative assessment, summative assessment, portfolio-based assessment, criterionreferenced assessment and norm-referenced assessment, serve different purposes in the teaching-learningprocess. This paper examines assessment as a tool for effective teaching and learning. It discusses themeaning, objectives, major types and functions of assessment and highlights its importance in improvingeducational outcomes. The study emphasizes that assessment should not be viewed merely as a mechanismfor assigning marks but as an integral part of the learning process. A well-planned assessment system cansupport both teachers and learners and contribute significantly to effective teaching and meaningful learning.
