Dynamics of Confrontation and Reconciliation in Sino-Indian Relations (1988-2005)

Between 1988 and 2005, Sino-Indian relations moved through a distinctive cycle of confrontation andreconciliation, shifting from the frozen hostility inherited from the 1962 border war toward a cautiouslyconstructed strategic partnership. This article examines the political, military and economic dynamics thatshaped this transition, beginning with Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi’s landmark 1988 visit to Beijing, movingthrough the confidence-building agreements of 1993 and 1996, the diplomatic rupture caused by India’s1998 nuclear tests, and the eventual normalisation culminating in the 2003 Declaration on Principles forRelations and the 2005 Agreement on Political Parameters and Guiding Principles for the Settlement of theBoundary Question. Employing a historical-analytical method grounded in bilateral agreements, officialstatements and secondary scholarly literature, the study identifies four discernible phases of engagementand argues that the relationship during this period was characterised not by a linear progression fromhostility to friendship, but by a recurring pattern in which unresolved territorial disputes and strategicmistrust repeatedly resurfaced even as economic interdependence and institutionalised dialogue mechanismsdeepened. The article presents trade and diplomatic-engagement data to illustrate how economic pragmatismincreasingly functioned as a stabilising counterweight to periodic political friction. The findings contributeto the broader literature on Asian great-power relations by demonstrating that the strategy of “de-linking”contentious issues from cooperative ones was the principal mechanism that allowed India and China tomanage, without resolving, their core disputes.
