THE IMPACT OF POOR POWER QUALITY ON ELECTRICAL AND ELECTRONIC APPLIANCES IN NIGERIA: CAUSES, EFFECTS, AND PREVENTIVE MEASURES.
Electrical power quality is important for the safe and reliable operation of electrical and electronic equipment. Disturbances such as voltage variations, transient overvoltages, interruptions, and waveform distortion can affect equipment performance and may cause damage when conditions exceed equipment tolerances. These issues are relevant to households, businesses, and industries that depend on reliable electricity and may use backup sources such as generators and inverters. This review article outlines common power-quality disturbances, their possible effects on appliances, and practical measures for reducing associated risks. It also describes the role of electrical engineers in monitoring supply conditions, designing suitable protection, and maintaining electrical installations. The discussion draws on the IEEE recommended practice for monitoring electric power quality
