Emotion regulation and psychological resilience in hospitality: The influence of nomophobia and netlessphobia on employees’ outcomes

This study examines the influence of emotion regulation strategies (cognitive reappraisal and expressive suppression) on psychological resilience among employees in Egypt’s five-star hotel sector. It also investigates how resilience affects employee outcomes, specifically regarding technology-related stressors like nomophobia and netlessphobia. Grounded in the Cognitive Appraisal Theory and the Broaden and Build Theory of Positive Emotions, this research used a quantitative approach. Data were collected from 437 employees at five-star chain hotels in major Egyptian tourist destinations. Established scales measured emotion regulation, psychological resilience, nomophobia, netlessphobia, job performance, and work-life balance. The results indicate that cognitive reappraisal positively influences psychological resilience, while expressive suppression has a negative influence. Psychological resilience was found to mitigate the negative effects of nomophobia and netlessphobia, leading to improved job performance and a better work-life balance. Resilient employees demonstrated higher connectivity and communication effectiveness.

Resilient employees demonstrated higher connectivity and communication effectiveness.
