CoARA-ERIP: from working group to community of practice

CoARA-ERIP is the place in the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment where research ethics and integrity and the data and artificial intelligence transformation of research are addressed together. On 29 September 2026 it published the consolidated body of its work as openly licensed records: a policy framework, a framework for assessing digital contributions, and methodological guidelines; a handbook; a tools and toolkits report and a protocol for the Modular Assessment Configurator; a controlled vocabulary and an ontology; five self-evaluation instruments piloted through SE4RA; and reports of the meetings through which the community formed. Two records bring this work together for CoARA community review: the Observatory on Responsible Research Assessment in Data and AI, which integrates the knowledge base, the policy framework, and the tools, and the self-evaluation toolkit, which integrates the instruments. This overview sets out the group’s founding, its reach across 53 countries, the bodies it has helped to found, its outputs and instruments, its place among CoARA’s working groups, chapters, and projects, and the community of practice into which it is now transitioning, with its objectives for 2026 to 2029.
