The Role of Mr. Prophulo's Social Oppression in Shon's Suicide: An Analysis of W. Tiewsoh's Novel La Bakla

The present study examines the representation of depression, psychological distress, and suicidal tendencies in the context of La Bakla, with particular emphasis on the social, cultural, and psychological factors associated with mental health. The study draws upon primary and secondary sources, including W. Tiewsoh’s La Bakla, Aaron T. Beck’s theoretical work on depression, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, and Émile Durkheim’s sociological study of suicide. The analysis explores how individual psychological experiences are influenced by social isolation, cultural expectations, interpersonal relationships, and broader societal conditions. Beck’s psychological perspective provides a framework for understanding depressive symptoms and emotional suffering, while Durkheim’s sociological approach helps interpret suicidal behaviour in relation to social integration and regulation. The study further highlights the importance of recognizing psychological distress within its cultural and social context. It argues that literary and sociological representations can contribute to a deeper understanding of depression and suicide by connecting individual experiences with wider social realities. The study concludes that an integrated psychological, sociological, and literary approach is essential for understanding mental health concerns and developing greater social awareness and sensitivity toward individuals experiencing emotional distress.
