Beyond The Rhetorical Triangle: Adapting Aristotle's Classical Rhetorical Theory into Modern Creative Writing Pedagogy

Creative writing pedagogy in undergraduate and graduate programs has inherited only part of the classical rhetorical tradition: Aristotle’s rhetorical triangle of ethos, pathos, and logos (often used as a heuristic for persuasive or argumentative prose). This reductionist inheritance obscures the more systematic and generative architecture of classical rhetoric, whose five canons (inventio, dispositio, elocutio, memoria, and pronuntiatio), plus subsidiary concepts (kairos, stasis theory, decorum (aptum)), form a technology for narrative invention, structure, voice, and audience management. This article argues that reintegrating the full classical canon into creative writing instruction shifts craft from an intuitive, inspiration-dependent activity to an intentional, rhetorically agile art. Building on the rhetorical theory of Aristotle, Cicero and Quintilian and narratological/compositional scholarship by Wayne C. Booth, Kenneth Burke, James Phelan, Peter Elbow and Wendy Bishop, this paper maps each classical canon onto specific creative writing skills (worldbuilding and characterisation (invention), plot architecture and suspense (arrangement), voice and register (style), performance and multimodal delivery (memory and delivery)) before extending the analysis to kairos and stasis theory. The paper concludes with concrete pedagogical recommendations for integrating rhetorical vocabulary into creative writing workshops, arguing that such integration cultivates the metacognitive craft awareness that distinguishes revision-capable writers from writers who can only wait for inspiration.
