Out on the western edge: records of the Bare-nosed Wombat Vombatus ursinus in the Cocoparra Reserves, in semi-arid southern inland New South Wales, Australia

Records of the Bare-nosed Wombat Vombatus ursinus were collated during the period 2019–2024 across the Cocoparra Reserves in semi-arid southern inland New South Wales. The presence of the species in the Cocoparra Reserves was associated with ephemeral waterways, topographic ruggedness, and forested areas. This paper discusses the regional conservation significance of this western Bare-nosed Wombat population, as well as the threats the population faces, including suspected sarcoptic mange, and highlights its likely ecological role as a keystone burrowing species.

Abstract

Records of the Bare-nosed Wombat Vombatus ursinus were collated during the period 2019–2024 across the Cocoparra Reserves in semi-arid southern inland New South Wales. The presence of the species in the Cocoparra Reserves was associated with ephemeral waterways, topographic ruggedness, and forested areas. This paper discusses the regional conservation significance of this western Bare-nosed Wombat population, as well as the threats the population faces, including suspected sarcoptic mange, and highlights its likely ecological role as a keystone burrowing species.
