The Metadata Bloom of Biodata: Explore Coscines Core Features
This poster has been presented at the Boosting Biodata Bootcamp 2026 (B3 Conference) in Aachen, hosted by NFDI4Microbiota and the NFDI Biodata Interest Group: FAIRagro, DataPLANT, NFDI4Biodiversity, and NFDI4BIOIMAGE. Abstract:Biodata are growing, and so is their metadata. Will this expansion become a garden of thorns or a place where beauty can be found? Coscine lets you keep that growth under control and offers scientists the tools to manage their data throughout the entire data life cycle. Scientific data can expand in a well‑managed way, thanks to the FAIR principles, which Coscine realises with features for creating and managing metadata, role management for project cooperations and reuse, as well as PIDs and archiving. Why is Coscine especially interesting for the biodata community? Because its core features are ingrained in the DNA of the platform, particularly metadata management and cooperation options. Existing metadata profiles of your discipline or RDM community can be imported into Coscine using TTL files and several other formats. Metadata profiles in Coscine can be used to build new profiles from an existing base by either using existing profiles as nodes or by creating newer versions or derivatives for given profiles. Since science in the biodata fields is rarely a solo venture, the invitation feature and role management functionalities support project‑based cooperation with quick and easy invitations while allowing users to maintain control over who can access the data. That way, common blockers for cooperation and reuse can be resolved. This is one reason why Coscine - a service originally developed for the federal state of North Rhine‑Westphalia - is now used in worldwide scientific cooperations. Are there more core functionalities in Coscine? Yes, there are! And they are all focused on supporting scientific projects throughout their entire life cycle. Find out on our interactive Coscine poster which functionalities are available and how they can be used to support your daily research or RDM work.
