Thematic Concerns and Existential Dimensions in the Poetry of Jayanta Mahapatra

Abstract Jayanta Mahapatra occupies a significant position in Indian English poetry because of the distinctive manner in which he combines personal experience, regional consciousness, historical memory, social observation, and existential reflection. His poetry frequently explores the individual’s encounter with loneliness, alienation, suffering, mortality, faith, desire, memory, and the uncertainties of human existence. At the same time, his poetic world remains deeply rooted in Odisha, its landscape, cultural traditions, religious practices, history, and ordinary social life. This paper examines the major thematic concerns and existential dimensions of Mahapatra’s poetry, with particular attention to alienation, loneliness, identity, death, suffering, memory, sexuality, spirituality, and the individual’s search for meaning. Poems such as “Hunger,” “Dawn at Puri,” “Indian Summer,” “A Rain of Rites,” “Relationship,” “Exile,” and other representative poems demonstrate how the personal and the geographical become interconnected in his poetic imagination. His treatment of religious imagery is particularly complex, bringing together spiritual questioning and cultural observation. His poetry also gives considerable attention to marginalized lives and the position of women within social structures. The paper argues that Mahapatra’s existential consciousness is not detached from Indian reality; rather, it emerges through landscape, history, culture, relationships, and everyday human experience. His poetry therefore presents existential uncertainty as both a deeply personal condition and a reflection of wider social and cultural realities.

His poetry frequently explores the individual’s encounter with loneliness, alienation, suffering, mortality, faith, desire, memory, and the uncertainties of human existence.
