Voices in Conflict: Bakhtinian Dialogism and the Pursuit of Uniqueness in Turgenev's First Love

Abstract: This study challenges the conventional critical consensus that classifies Ivan Turgenev as a purely monologic writer by offering a thorough Bakhtinian reading of his 1860 novella First Love (Pervaia liubov'). Through the application of Mikhail Bakhtin's fundamental theories of dialogism, polyphony, the carnivalesque, and alterity, this study contends that the search for human individuality and adolescent individuation in the text is an active event produced solely through interpersonal confrontation with the "Other," rather than an internal, solitary discovery. The study follows Vladimir Petrovich, the main character, as he is forcibly removed from his closed-off, monologic world of aristocracy and thrown into the carnivalesque setting of the Zasyekin household. Vladimir is exposed to a disruptive web of heteroglossia in this heterotopic salon where conventional social, age, and socioeconomic hierarchies are methodically reversed. Vladimir's attempts to convert Zinaida Alexandrovna to a passive romantic cliche are dashed as he is forced to confront her extreme alterity through his torturous psychological and linguistic battle with the mysterious woman. At the end, this paper shows how First Love functions as a deep polyphonic furnace, showing that individuality and selfhood are constantly performed and recreated at the point of dialogic friction rather than being static or finished.
