Trends in the Prevalence of Tooth Loss Due to Dental Caries During Periods of Dental Health Insurance Expansion in Korea.
PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine national trends in the prevalence of tooth loss due to dental caries among Korean adults across periods of dental health insurance expansion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey for 2007-2009 (pre-policy period) and 2016-2018 (post-policy period), this study examined changes in the prevalence of tooth loss due to dental caries among adults aged 19 years and older. A complex sample logistic regression analysis was conducted, adjusting for covariates such as sex, age, region, income level, toothbrushing frequency, and dental checkup history. RESULTS: The prevalence of tooth loss due to dental caries was lower in 2016-2018 compared with 2007-2009. After adjustment for covariates, the odds of caries-related tooth loss were significantly lower in the later period (P 0.001). However, a higher prevalence persisted among older adults, individuals with lower income, and rural residents. CONCLUSION: This study identified a declining trend in caries-related tooth loss during periods of dental health insurance expansion in Korea. Despite overall improvements, socioeconomic and regional disparities remained evident, indicating the need for targeted strategies to address oral health inequalities among vulnerable populations.
