Maharshi Panini and Education: Re-envisioning linguistics within the Indian
Maharshi Panini, the distinguished grammarian of ancient India, holds a prominent place in the history oflinguistics and the Indian intellectual tradition. His principal work, the Acmādhyayī, presents a highlysystematic, rule-governed account of Sanskrit and has attracted sustained scholarly attention from linguists, philosophers, historians of language, and computational linguists. Beyond its role as a grammatical treatise, the Paninian tradition offers valuable insights into systematic classification, economy of expression, rulebased reasoning, and structured knowledge transmission. This study investigates Panini’s contributions tolinguistic theory and explores selected pedagogical implications of his grammatical framework forcontemporary education. Additionally, it situates Panini within the Indian Knowledge System and considersthe potential relevance of Paninian principles to modern language pedagogy and multidisciplinary learning.Employing a qualitative, review-based methodology, the study analyses books and peer-reviewed scholarlypublications on Paninian grammar, linguistic theory, phonology, computation, and Indian approaches tolanguage and education. The study examines the literature through interpretive and comparative analyses. The scholarly review indicates that the Acmādhyāyī demonstrates a highly formal organisation, sophisticatedrule interaction, economy of expression, and generative characteristics. Research on the Śiva Sūtras andpratyāhāra system further underscores the significance of systematic sound classification and economicalrepresentation within Pāninian grammar. Contemporary scholarship has also explored the relationshipbetween Panini an grammar and formal computation and compared aspects of the Indian grammaticaltradition with modern phonetic and phonological theories.
