Associations between healthy beverage index and general obesity and lipid profile: a result from the Ravansar Non-Communicable Disease prospective cohort study

Abstract The Healthy Beverage Index (HBI) is a tool to measure the impact of beverage consumption on health. Many studies shown a positive association between HBI and improved health outcomes. However, there is a lack of research that examines the link between beverage consumption patterns and lipid profiles and obesity. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the relationship between HBI and lipid profiles, as well as general obesity. We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using data collected at the inception of the Ravansar Non-communicable Disease (RaNCD) cohort study. HBI was calculated using food items from the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ). Logistic regression analysis was performed to assess the association between HBI scores and general obesity, dyslipidemia as well as lipid profile. A total of 7,521 individuals aged 35 to 65 years were selected for the analysis. The results showed that the odds ratio for the relationship between HBI and obesity were 0.72 (95%CI:0.63, 0.82) for tertile 2 relative to tertile 1 of HBI. The corresponding value for tertile 3 relative to tertile 1 of HBI was 0.78 (95%CI:0.68, 0.89), whereas the odds ratios for the relationship between tertile 2 relative to tertile 1 of HBI and dyslipidemia, TG, LDL, HDL, and TC were not significant, after adjusting for confounding factors. The study found that higher adherence to HBI scores was associated with lower odds of general obesity in Iranian adults. However, no significant relationship was found between the tertiles of HBI and dyslipidemia as well as lipid profile.
