Lower characteristic, B -Fredholm operators and essential spectra

In this paper, we characterize lower characteristic operators on Banach spaces in terms of upper semi-B-Fredholm operators. We establish necessary and sufficient conditions for this characterization and investigate the consequences for the essential spectrum. These results extend the existing Fredholm theory and yield further spectral properties of weakly demicompact operators.
