FORMULATION AND EVALUATION OF HYDROGEL FILM FROM SESBANIA GRANDIFLORA FLOWER

The current study would involve pharmacognostic and phytochemical investigation of Sesbania grandiflora flowers to confirm the quality and identity of the plant. Plant extract would be used to formulate hydrogel film using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG-400). Calcium sulphate would be used as cross linking agent during the preparation of hydrogel film. Further, corn husk mesh would be incorporated as natural biomaterial in hydrogel film for improving its mechanical, flexibility, biodegradability and sustainability properties. Hydrogel films find wide application in wound dressing because of their moisture retaining, protection of wound from infection and controlled drug delivery property. Incorporation of corn husk mesh which is a waste material from agriculture and high in cellulose content would make it more sustainable. Green chemistry metrics would also be used for evaluating sustainability of the process. Finally, prepared hydrogel film would be characterized for physicochemical and biological properties including antimicrobial and wound healing property.
