"Urban Growth and Regional Development in Marathwada : Geographical and Demographic Study "
Abstract Urbanization is an important indicator of regional development and reflects changes in population, settlement patterns, economic activities, and infrastructure. Marathwada is a distinctive geographical region of Maharashtra characterized by significant spatial and temporal variations in urban growth. The present study examines the geographical and demographic dimensions of urban growth and regional development in Marathwada, with particular emphasis on changes in urban population over time and across different districts. The study is based on primary and secondary data, which are processed and represented using statistical and cartographic techniques. The analysis identifies three major phases of urbanization: slow urbanization during 1901–1931, moderate urbanization during 1931–1961, and rapid urbanization during 1961–2001. The study highlights the major factors associated with urban growth, including rural-to-urban migration, industrialization, trade, government development projects, irrigation development, the expansion of existing towns, and the transformation of villages into urban settlements. The findings indicate substantial growth in the urban population of Marathwada, particularly after 1961, with major urban centres such as Aurangabad, Nanded, Parbhani, and Latur playing important roles in regional development. The study also emphasizes the importance of the Godavari River basin in the development of urban settlements. Overall, the research provides a spatio-temporal perspective on urbanization and demographic transformation in Marathwada and highlights the relationship between population growth, settlement development, and regional development.
