Teaching sociology in higher education: Pedagogical practices and possibilities

British sociology has historically devoted relatively little time to discussing the pedagogical practices and possibilities of sociological teaching within higher education. This article discusses the changing landscape of higher education and the pressures and pulls currently shaping teaching within the discipline of sociology. It then presents a brief distillation and outline of the articles that feature in this special issue, each of which presents an innovative approach to sociological pedagogy to best bring alive the discipline. In this way, the issue makes a significant contribution to the pedagogy of sociology at a time when the discipline and the wider work of the university are often under attack.
