Key Geographical Natural-Environmental Destinations for Medical Tourism in Maharashtra: Potentials, Challenges, and Strategic Directions
Abstract Maharashtra, India’s second-most populous state, is emerging not only as a center for advanced clinical care but also as a destination for natural-environment medical tourism. This research examines the key ecological and geographical regions in Maharashtra—such as hill stations, coastal zones, and biodiversity landscapes—that can support wellness tourism, recuperative medical stays, and eco-therapeutic services. Drawing from government tourism policy, ecotourism literature, and case studies (e.g., Kaivalyadhama, Malvan-Achara), the study explores opportunities, infrastructural and regulatory challenges, and strategic pathways to integrate health and nature tourism. The paper recommends a framework for sustainable development, promotion, and accreditation of nature-based medical tourism sites in Maharashtra. This paper aims to: 1. Identify key natural-environment destinations in Maharashtra relevant for medical/wellness tourism.
