The Cat Mirror Law: Structural Epistemology and the Prerequisite of Functional Comprehension in Self-Recognition

Abstract This manuscript proposes The Cat Mirror Law as an alternative epistemic framework: Self-recognition within a mediated reflection may not be an immediate perceptive outcome, but rather a contingent, secondary function dependent upon the cognitive mapping of the medium's functional physics. This study suggests that an agent ($A$) cannot reliably recognize its reflection ($A'$) in a substrate ($M$) without first processing $M$'s structural operational principles. Consequently, standard Mirror Self-Recognition (MSR) tests may inadvertently measure a dual-variable phenomenon (medium comprehension + self-awareness), potentially confounding structural misinterpretation with an absence of self-consciousness.
