Managing Libya’s World Heritage Sites: an integrated approach to mapping, monitoring and recovery

Abstract This article presents the outcomes of Managing Libya’s Cultural Heritage (MaLiCH) , a collaborative project focused on three UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Old Town of Ghadames, Lepcis Magna and Sabratha. It presents and examines the project’s main activities, from capacity-building, via survey, documentation and risk assessment, to the prioritisation and implementation of conservation interventions. Drawing on work at a historic city and two archaeological sites, the article reflects on the successes and challenges of working at different scales, across different site typologies and under varied environmental conditions.
