The Number-Word Cipher: Selecting Letters by Repetition Count — a Homophonic Cipher Using Turkish Number Words

This work describes a cipher that maps letters onto the letters of a word list. A symbol selects a word, and the number of times the symbol is repeated gives the position of the letter within that word; letters that occur in no word are written unchanged. The system is homophonic — some letters have several valid codes. Two configurations are defined. In the base form the word source is the set of Turkish number words, reached through a permutation table; because the key is the language's own numerals, no key distribution is required. In the generalised form the number words are replaced by a freely chosen word list, which makes the system keyed and compliant with Kerckhoffs's principle and allows the homophone distribution to be designed against letter frequencies. The same rule runs on three carriers: digits, colours (colour selects the word, block width gives the letter position) and solfège notes. The document gives the full specification, two verified worked examples (one in all three carriers), an analysis of the segmentation ambiguity with a proposed separator rule, frequency measurements on a Turkish corpus, and a comparison with known methods including goroawase, the Beale cipher, the Great Cipher, the straddling checkerboard, Solresol and the Enigma. A reference implementation and the measurement script are included. Turkish and English versions are provided. ---- Bu çalışma, harfleri bir kelime listesinin harflerine eşleyen bir şifreleme sistemini tanımlar. Abstract
