Transformation of the Suburban Fringe Area in the Khadakwasla Catchment: Sangrun Village, Pune District
Abstract Suburban fringe areas are areas of transition, where both urban and rural environments are present. These places experience socio-economic and geographical changes in the rural settlements influenced by the adjoining urban centres. This study is focused to Sangrun village of Haveli Taluka in Pune district. Sangrun, which is located 35 km from the Pune metropolis, is still under the influence of Pune. The data used in the research was primary data which were collected using household survey, personal interviews and field observation and secondary data which were acquired from census, maps and administrative sources. The changes in land use and land utilization, agricultural practices, livelihood structure, demographic change and social infrastructure are covered. Typical characteristics of a suburban fringe area in Sangrun include intensive and market-oriented agriculture, as well as high agro-urban linkages and rural-urban migration (especially youth) and partial urbanization of services. Urban areas are relied upon for more advanced services, but local social infrastructure provides basic services. The overall integrity of Sangrun is a hybrid socio-geographical character. The words used are: Rural–urban fringe; Peri-urbanisation; Agrarian transformation; Land-use dynamics; Migration; Pune district.
