A Class of Deviation Effect: Photoelectric Effect as a Limiting Case

We formulate a mathematical class of deviation effects in which an observable quan-tity is represented by a reference relation together with a deviation term. Let E0 denotea reference energy and let ∆E represent the deviation generated by an interaction. Thegeneral energy relation is written in the formEout = Ein − E0 + ∆E.For photon–matter interaction, the identifications Ein = hν and E0 = Φ yieldKmax = hν − Φ + ∆E.The conventional photoelectric equation follows as the limiting case ∆E → 0. Thusthe photoelectric relation is embedded in a broader deviation structure rather thantaken as the general starting relation. The formulation provides a mathematical basisfor studying effects associated with departures from a reference energy balance.
