Technetium-99m DTPA Scintigraphy in a Case of Supernumerary Kidneys with Horseshoe Malformation

A supernumerary kidney is a rare congenital anomaly where there is one or more additional kidneys with an independent blood supply, drainage system and well-defined capsule. These kidneys can frequently develop hydronephrosis, calculi or infection, thus requiring intervention. In this study, we report a 19-year-old girl with bilateral supernumerary kidneys associated with a horseshoe malformation. The right-sided kidneys had dilated collecting systems with an obstructed drainage pattern on Technetium- 99 m Diethylene triamine penta acetic acid (Tc- 99 m DTPA) scintigraphy.
