Optimizing crop productivity and environmental sustainability through biofertilizer application in modern farming systems
As the global human population continues to grow, ensuring food security becomes increasingly difficult, particularly as soil nutrient levels and fertility decline. To address the increasing food needs, improving agricultural productivity is urgently necessary. The widespread use of chemical fertilizers to boost food production has disturbed ecological balance, harmed human health, and is increasingly unaffordable for many farmers. In this context, biofertilizers offer a sustainable, eco-friendly solution to support crop growth. They primarily augment chemical fertilizers to preserve soil fertility by improving nutrient availability, plant growth and soil structure. By using biofertilizers, we can help preserve vital natural resources and promote green agriculture. This review paper examines various types of biofertilizers and elaborates on their roles and applications in agriculture. It further emphasizes the numerous benefits of biofertilizers, such as reducing dependence on chemical fertilizers, improving crop yield, managing environmental stresses, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. While biofertilizers hold great potential, several challenges hinder their widespread adoption. By overcoming these obstacles, biofertilizers can play a crucial role in supporting eco-friendly farming practices, underscoring their importance in building sustainable agricultural systems and promoting long-term soil health. Additionally, the paper discusses recent advancements in the biofertilizer industry and explores future directions, focusing on their impacts on soil and the environment.
