Caregiver-reported parenting self-efficacy after nurse-led NICU-to-home education for preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia: A 12-month single-group study

Caregivers of infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia require preparation for complex home care. This prospective single-group study examined caregiver outcomes after nurse-led transition education in three Egyptian neonatal units. Eighty-two caregivers received eight pre-discharge modules (12 h over four weeks) and monthly post-discharge telehealth boosters for three months. Outcomes were assessed before education and 3, 6, and 12 months after programme completion. Within-cohort parenting self-efficacy increased from 55.2 (SD 7.8) at baseline to 72.5 (SD 5.5) at 12 months; the Rubin-pooled 12-month fixed time coefficient was 17.3 points (95% CI 15.7–18.9). Retrospective ratings of neonatal intensive care stress decreased, while respiratory-care knowledge and exploratory family-quality-of-life scores increased. Twelve-month retention was 85.4%, and attendance was 614/656 participant-module opportunities (93.6%). Without a comparator, programme participation cannot be separated from maturation, recovery after discharge, or repeated measurement. Controlled evaluation of structured skills teaching with early telehealth reinforcement is warranted.
