Artificial Intelligence And future of Library and Information Services: A conceptual Perspective

Abstract In the era of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the field of Library and Information Science is evolving rapidly with the introduction of new paradigms in information management, information discovery, and service delivery. This is a conceptual paper that analyses the role of AI and its future implications on the library and information services. It examines key AI technologies such as machine learning, natural language processing, chatbots, robotics, AI-powered discovery services, personalized information services and generative AI, and explores how these are being used in modern libraries. This paper emphasises the benefits of these technologies in information retrieval, automating repetitive library functions, delivering personalized services to users, facilitating research activities, and engaging users. It also looks at how technology is evolving like smart libraries and AI-driven information services. Meanwhile, the paper covers important challenges that must be addressed in the context of the adoption of AI, such as privacy, data security, algorithmic bias, misinformation, copyright, ethical issues, technological costs, and technical skills. The evolving nature of the role of LIS professionals and the skills needed to collaborate with emerging AI technologies are given special attention. The paper proposes that AI is not the end of librarians but an enabler and a supportive tool for librarians. By combining AI with professional knowledge, ethical considerations, and human-centred services, libraries can become smarter, more efficient, user-friendly, and responsive to user needs. The study highlights the need for responsible use of AI, ongoing professional growth, and collaboration between technology and human skills to shape the future of library services. This is an excellent list of keywords to help you understand the context of this subject.
