The Role of Digital Wallets and UPI in Achieving Financial Empowerment for Underserved Populations in Emerging Markets
Abstract An analysis studies on the impact of digital wallets on India's financial inclusion and investigated the influence of the Unified Payment Interface (UPI) on resident’s banking activity. India's payments system processed more than 172 billion UPI transactions worth more than Rs. 260 lakh crore in FY25. This study explored the contribution of such a significant number of transactions to the financial empowerment of the population using UPI. This study utilised NPCI data, RBI reports, and field observations in Indian villages to understand the scale of the phenomenon and evaluate whether and how digital payments tools transform people's attitudes towards money. Analysis revealed that UPI usage in urban India exceeds 78%, while Indian rural women only use it at 28%. Thus, UPI usage is lower in India's rural areas than in urban regions, but it seems to be growing steadily. This article contains the statistics on adoption rates and seven barriers to entry, including policy recommendations on how to address them. It is observed that India's experience with financial technology is not inherently exclusionary, but careful consideration of several variables is needed to ensure that everyone can benefit from technology-enabled financial inclusion.
