Smart Farming: Technological Empowerment of Rural Farmers and Challenges
Abstract This study examines the technological empowerment of rural farmers through the adoption of smart farming technologies in Karad tehsil of Maharashtra. Based on primary information collected from 200 farmers, the study assesses awareness, adoption, technological empowerment and the major constraints affecting smart farming. The analysis uses frequency, percentage, average, a five-point Likert scale, Awareness Index, Adoption Index, Constraint Index, Technological Empowerment Index and correlation analysis. The findings indicate a relatively high Smart Farming Awareness Index of 68.90, while the Adoption Index is comparatively low at 38.50, revealing a substantial gap between awareness and actual adoption. The Technological Empowerment Index of 65.20 indicates a moderately high level of technological empowerment. However, the Constraint Index of 70.80 highlights significant barriers, particularly high technology costs, lack of technical knowledge, inadequate training and poor internet connectivity. Correlation results show positive relationships between smart farming adoption and awareness, digital literacy and training. The study concludes that effective technological empowerment requires not only access to technology but also affordable solutions, digital literacy, training, technical support, improved connectivity and institutional assistance.
