Economic Dynamics, Cluster Statistics, and Market Evolution of the Paithani Textile Industry in Maharashtra
Abstract Paithani silk weaving represents one of Maharashtra’s most culturally iconic and economically vital handloom clusters. Originating in Paithan during the Satavahana era and later expanding significantly to Yeola in Nashik district, the industry currently supports over 10,000 artisan households and generates an estimated annual turnover exceeding ₹500 Crores. This empirical research paper provides a comprehensive economic analysis of the Paithani sector, focusing on supply chain logistics, wage structures, raw material cost dynamics (mulberry silk and zari), and market transformations. Furthermore, it addresses the market distortions caused by powerloom imitations, evaluates the protective impact of Geographical Indication (GI Tag No. 3), and measures the expansion of direct-to-consumer (D2C) e-commerce channels targeting domestic and NRI consumer bases.
