Accessibility Assessment of a Historic Mosque Through Universal Design Principles: The Case of Edirne Old Mosque

Background/Aim: This study examines the accessibility of the Edirne Old Mosque within the context of Universal Design Principles and assesses its relationship with contemporary access standards for historical buildings. Methods: The study utilized observation, measurement, and standard comparison methods, analyzing physical, perceptual, and environmental accessibility in accordance with TSE 9111, TSE 12576, ADAAG, and ICOMOS principles. Results: Findings revealed an overall accessibility level of 46%. The lack of ramps and signage in the exterior, inadequate floor texture and lighting in the interior, and lack of Braille and multilingual signage in the information system were identified. However, the wide-open spaces and central location of the spatial organization present opportunities for improvement. The study developed recommendations for portable ramps, tactile surfaces, contrast enhancement, and administrative awareness, based on the principle of "reversible intervention." The results demonstrate that accessibility is not only an architectural necessity but also a strategic element in social policy and the democratization of cultural heritage.Conclusion: This study contributes original value by demonstrating how universal design principles can be systematically applied to a historic mosque, offering an evidence-based framework for balancing accessibility requirements with heritage conservation.
