Need Gradients and the Four Components of Flexibility The Individual Dynamics of a Barrier-Lake Model

Abstract Maslow's hierarchy of needs writes satisfaction as a ladder leading to an apex. It explains the suffering of deprivation but not the collapse that follows satisfaction. Taking the Principle of Nonuniformity as footing, this paper writes a need as a potential difference between a subject and its environment, the difference between a set point and the current level of satisfaction, and adopts the four components of flexibility — cognition, affect, conation and action — placing them in a barrier-lake model with named components. Inflow is the product of the need gradient, the conductance of the channel and the opening of the valve. The lake water is the activated motivational stock. The four components sit at four different places: the drive, the reading channel, the activity equation and the stock equation. Six results follow. First, satisfaction switches off its own drive. This is a general property of any negative-feedback loop with a fixed set point, and it makes the drift that follows satisfaction an endogenous consequence of effective action. Second, a U-shaped loss with two power arms has no fold, so the U-shape itself produces no collapse; collapse comes only from the spinodal of the activity equation, which belongs to the survival set and precedes the U-shaped optimum lexicographically. Because a living person has spontaneous activation, that collapse is a saddle-node with hysteresis, while relaxation after the drive is withdrawn is a smooth crossover with no transition at all. Third, on the positive sign branch added drive only makes the maintained state more stable: with a synergy parameter of 4, raising the combined bistability parameter from 0.1 to 0.2 moves the spinodal from 1.0506 to 1.1025. On the negative branch added drive crosses the spinodal, at a critical drive of 1.6745 for the demonstration parameters. Fourth, on the positive sign branch over-release is a separate trigger of running dry. It applies only to people whose active state depends on drive; the critical release rate is 1.257 for the demonstration parameters, and the asymmetry points the same way as that of Kelly betting. On the negative branch releasing faster raises the bistability parameter instead. Fifth, the return to action is of two kinds, consumption and investment. Investment acts only on tributaries whose gap is still open, so once every durable gap tends to zero no action can sustain the inflow, and only the movement of the set point, the appearance of a new dimension and the meaning stock remain; recurrent needs keep only the inflow set by the rate at which satisfaction wears off. Sixth, readings can go wrong from three sources — an external storm, internal drift and a rewritten set point — which only perturbations the subject does not control can tell apart, and the subject's observation of itself does not satisfy passivity. The state of flexibility is written as four signed deviations, of which the binary configurations of intact and failed components are a projection. The paper closes with an audit of the extended metaphor and seven registered predictions.
