Geo-Spatial Assessment of Cyclone Shelter Suitability Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process

This poster presents a GIS-based multi-criteria assessment of cyclone shelter suitability in Chittagong Division, Bangladesh, using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP). Eight spatial criteria—wind speed, elevation, slope, rainfall, land cover, proximity to roads, proximity to rivers, and population density—were integrated within a weighted overlay framework to identify suitable locations for cyclone shelters. The analysis classified the study area into five suitability categories: highly suitable, suitable, moderately suitable, less suitable, and not suitable. The AHP consistency ratio was 5.3%, remaining within the accepted 10% threshold. The resulting suitability assessment identifies potential cyclone shelter locations and provides a spatial decision-support framework for disaster-resilient shelter planning in cyclone-prone coastal regions of Bangladesh.
